Salatan Resort
Although the entrance to Salatan Resort by road is a bit lost down the back streets behind Saladan Village, once you are there, you will appreciate the location. At the northern tip of the coast, on the narrow beach named Kaw Kwang (Deer Neck), the resort overlooks the crescent of Klong Dao beach, which starts a few hundred metres away and enjoys open vistas across the Andaman Sea.
With a newly built 7 x 17m swimming pool (2006) sitting in front of the beach, as well as a nice garden setting with umbrellas and deck chairs, Salatan Resort is a peaceful and relaxing spot, remaining quiet even in peak season. The few (20) rooms are arranged in neat rows behind the pool, with the exception of the 2 teakwood Deluxe Beach Front houses which are right at the front next to the sand.
The other bungalows are all the same, standard Thai style, reasonably spacious, clean and light, but looking a little shabby. They are tiled throughout and have a large fridge, TV, fan and a/c, safe box and a few pictures on the walls. The bathrooms are also quite old, but do have a separate hot water shower, which saves water running over the whole bathroom floor. The only difference between Deluxe and Beach Front is the location, the latter being on the first row behind the pool, with the Deluxe bungalows in the row behind them.
The 2 Deluxe Beach Front bungalows are newly constructed from teak wood with traditional Thai roofs. They are quite different in style from the older bungalows and offer a high-ceilinged bedroom with a mezzanine level (though very high steps and a tendency to get quite hot would make this unsuitable for very young children to sleep on). The bathroom is large, with a walk-in shower and deep bathtub with sea view.
The resort restaurant offers Thai and western food, but you may find yourself looking for other options after a few days - in which case Saladan village is a 10 min walk or short taxi ride away. There is a tour counter and the swimming pool has a larger than average shallow area for children. For swimming in the sea, you will need to walk down to Klong Dao - the beach at Kaw Kwang, although beautiful, is very shallow with no incline so not suitable for anything more than splashing.
