Kantiang Bay View Resort
Pretty much the only cheapie still left on the beautiful Ba-Kantiang Bay, the local family-run Kantiang Bay View represents good value for money - though that is mainly to do with its location, rather than the resort itself. Rooms are fairly densely packed together, staff are lackadaisical and - at least on our visit - there was a strong smell from the septic tanks around the bungalows.
The rooms themselves are all less than 20m from the beach; some are housed in a building above the reception area and are sea or inland facing; others are in semi-detached bungalows, called "beach front" rooms. The decor style is typical local Thai - veneer panels, garish tiles and shiny curtains, but the rooms are clean. All come with air con and fan, and a fridge - there is no TV in any room.
En-suite bathrooms are fully tiled and have a western toilet and sporadic hot water shower.
There are plenty of facilities on offer here - as well as a bookshop and internet cafe, there is a tour and ticketing agency, motorbikes for rent, international phone service, money exchange, Thai massage pavilions, as well as snorkelling equipment for rent and "Thai cookery classes" - free lessons involving observing the restaurant staff at work.
The Why Not? beach bar is popular with both guests and outsiders and is a nice place to chill out in the evenings - and even in the day with its hammocks and benches. Music does go on quite late and can be heard in the rooms, though it is usually not very loud.
Kantiang Bay View is an average resort in an above average location: for those who wish to stay on this beach on a budget, it is a good option.
